01Check import eligibility before purchasing

What to do

Match the VIN and technical details against ABS requirements. Obtain identification and purchase documents. Foreign registration alone does not guarantee eligibility for Serbian registration.

Where to go

ABS/authorised inspection organisation; customs representative

What to prepare

  • Foreign registration document, VIN, invoice or purchase contract
  • Technical specifications/COC where needed
02Declare the vehicle at the border and complete customs processing

What to do

Declare the vehicle to customs when entering for import. Prepare the original invoice or contract with required seller-signature certification, vehicle document and declaration. Preferential duty depends on proven origin, not simply the country of purchase.

Where to go

Border and destination customs offices; filing representative

What to prepare

  • Vehicle document, invoice/contract and customs declaration
  • Origin evidence if claiming a preferential rate
03Complete imported-vehicle inspection

What to do

Agree release for inspection with customs and present the vehicle to an authorised organisation with the official form. Pay under the instructions received after filing. Conflicting technical details may require a COC and court-certified translation.

Where to go

Inspection organisation listed by ABS

What to prepare

  • Application form, original vehicle document and customs papers
  • Receipts; COC/translation where necessary
04Arrange roadworthiness inspection, insurance and registration

What to do

After completing import and receiving a positive inspection result, prepare first-registration papers. Complete roadworthiness inspection, obtain compulsory liability insurance and submit to MUP/an authorised registration office. Collect Serbian registration papers and plates.

Where to go

Roadworthiness station, insurer; MUP registration service

What to prepare

  • Ownership, customs papers and ABS certificate
  • Passport/residence details, roadworthiness evidence, insurance and instructed payments
Translation and filing

Translation and certification

Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.

What happens next

File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.
