01Separate Serbian origin from citizenship
What to do
This route is for a foreign national with evidence of Serbian origin. A residence card does not establish citizenship. First identify whether your own record or a direct ancestor's record proves the origin.
Where to go
MUP foreigners unit; archive/civil registry for family documents
What to prepare
- Available origin records and family links
02Build the documentary chain to the ancestor
What to do
For an ancestor's record, collect birth records for every link and marriage/name-change records where needed. Reconcile names and dates. Give the documents to a court interpreter as a set; legalisation depends on the issuing country, not a universal apostille rule.
Where to go
Civil registries, archives and a court interpreter
What to prepare
- Origin evidence, kinship/name-change records and required translations
- Entry passport and stamped pages
- Serbian address evidence and owner's consent where applicable
03Complete the official application and keep the receipt
What to do
Select your actual ground, upload legible files, pay using service instructions and check that the application is submitted rather than saved as a draft. A minor's residence application is made in person by the legal representative.
Where to go
eForeigner; for permitted in-person applications, the MUP foreigners unit for the registered address
What to prepare
- Entry passport and stamped pages
- Serbian address evidence and owner's consent where applicable
- Ground-specific evidence, application and payment receipt
04Collect the card and separately prepare renewal
What to do
After biometrics, check the card. Carta Serbica renewal requires evidence of an ongoing connection such as work, business, property, income or pension; repeating the ancestor's story is insufficient. Check the current checklist before filing.
Where to go
MUP foreigners unit; employer, bank or registry for updated evidence
What to prepare
- Card, passport and updated renewal evidence
Translation and filing
Translation and certification
Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.
What happens next
File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.
