01Define the cover you need

What to do

Separate a policy for residence requirements, travel insurance and voluntary cover for planned care: they are not interchangeable. List the period, age, required services and budget; send medical information only to the insurer through a secure channel.

Where to go

Insurer; the official requirements for your residence basis if buying a residence policy.

What to prepare

  • Identity details and coverage period
  • Recipient’s written policy requirements if needed for an application
02Check the insurer and exclusions

What to do

Find the insurer in the NBS register. Before payment, request full terms covering clinic network, limits, deductibles, waiting periods, exclusions and approval procedure. Ask specifically about pre-existing conditions, pregnancy and child care; advertising does not replace the contract.

Where to go

Licensed insurer or authorised intermediary.

What to prepare

  • Written quotation and full policy terms
  • Insurer questionnaire with truthful answers if required
03Conclude the contract and keep your policy

What to do

Check your name, dates, Serbian territorial coverage and insured risks. Keep the policy, terms and payment receipt. Obtain the assistance number and booking instructions. A private policy does not automatically register you with RFZO.

Where to go

Your chosen insurer.

What to prepare

  • Policy, terms and receipt
  • Assistance contacts and policy number
04Arrange the appointment or reimbursement before spending

What to do

Before planned care, provide the policy number and obtain clinic/service approval where required. If self-paying, check reimbursement evidence and deadlines first. Keep the invoice, receipt, report and referral; out-of-network reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Where to go

Insurer assistance and the approved clinic.

What to prepare

  • Policy number, approval and identification
  • For reimbursement: invoice, receipt and medical evidence required by the contract
Translation and filing

Translation and certification

Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.

What happens next

File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.
