01Check the current bank list and account terms

What to do

First check the bank against the NBS's current official list. Then ask about resident or non-resident accounts and required currencies. Banking status is not tax residency. Obtain current maintenance and transfer fees before applying.

Where to go

The NBS bank list and the chosen bank's official website.

What to prepare

  • Passport and residence information

First identify your route

  • Account for a foreign non-resident.
  • Status change after longer residence.
  • Additional KYC/source-of-funds documents requested by the bank.
02Prepare identity and source-of-funds evidence

What to do

A non-resident needs identity and last-year residence evidence. The bank may request income, account purpose and tax information for customer checks.

Where to go

The bank officer handling foreign-citizen accounts.

What to prepare

  • Passport; address evidence; residence permit if held
  • Employment contract / source-of-funds statement if requested
03Complete the bank's application and agreement

What to do

Use that bank's application, not a universal template. Check name, address, currencies, fees and card terms. Obtain your agreement and account details.

Where to go

At the chosen bank; remotely only if the bank supports it.

What to prepare

  • Bank application, customer questionnaire and agreement
04Check access and update your information

What to do

Check app access and incoming-transfer details. Notify the bank of residence/address changes. Request written reasons for refusal; use the NBS procedure for a dispute.

Where to go

Bank support; for a dispute, first submit a written complaint to the bank.

What to prepare

  • Agreement, account details and changed-status evidence
Translation and filing

Translation and certification

Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.

What happens next

File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.

Document overview and case variants
