01Identify the notarial act needed
What to do
Distinguish a certified copy, signature certification and the required notarial contract form. A certified copy matches the presented document; it does not prove every statement in it is true. Ask the recipient how many copies it needs.
Where to go
Receiving institution and public notary — javni beležnik
What to prepare
- Document and recipient's written requirement
02Choose an office and prepare the original
What to do
Find an active office in the official directory. For a copy bring the document it must be checked against; for a signature bring identification and the text. For property transactions confirm territorial competence.
Where to go
Office from the official notary directory
What to prepare
- Original/accepted certified version, copies and passport
03Present documents and sign in the required manner
What to do
Do not pre-sign if signing before the notary is required; agree the certification method. If you do not understand Serbian, arrange a court interpreter in advance. Pay the tariff for the actual service.
Where to go
Public notary; court interpreter where needed
What to prepare
- Passport, text/original and representative's authority if applicable
04Check certification and additional requirements
What to do
Check page count, names and certification endorsement and collect all copies. A notarised copy does not replace court-certified translation or apostille. For a foreign recipient separately check authentication of the actual document being submitted.
Where to go
Notary office; then receiving institution
What to prepare
- Certified copies, original and receipt
Translation and filing
Translation and certification
Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.
What happens next
File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.
