01Contact the registrar where the wedding will take place
What to do
Choose the municipality and date, then confirm documents for each partner's citizenship. The link gives Belgrade's official checklist and registry contacts; elsewhere use your local civil registry.
Where to go
Municipal matična služba — civil registry
What to prepare
- Passports, both nationalities and preferred date
Example enquiry
An illustrative example, not an official form. Use the prescribed form where required.
Please confirm the marriage procedure in [city]. We are citizens of [countries]. Which birth and marital-status documents are needed, how recent must they be, and is an interpreter required at the ceremony?
First identify your route
- One future spouse is a foreign citizen.
- Foreign civil-status records require legalization or an international form.
- A sworn court interpreter is needed because a party does not understand Serbian.
02Obtain birth and marital-status documents
What to do
A foreign national needs a valid passport, birth certificate and proof of unmarried status. If previously married, prepare evidence that the marriage ended if the registrar requests it.
Where to go
Authorities of the issuing/citizenship country or its consulate
What to prepare
- Birth certificate and unmarried-status certificate
- Divorce/death document for a former spouse where applicable
03Arrange required legalisation and certified translation
What to do
Check treaty exemptions or an international-format certificate. If no exemption applies, obtain the necessary apostille/legalisation and Serbian court-certified translation. An apostille does not replace translation.
Where to go
Competent authority in the issuing country; Serbian court interpreter
What to prepare
- Originals with required authentication and certified translations
04Submit documents, marry and obtain the certificate
What to do
Show originals to the registrar and agree witnesses, interpreter and fees. Check the marriage certificate after the ceremony. Family residence requires a separate application; marriage does not automatically issue a permit.
Where to go
Civil registry of the chosen municipality
What to prepare
- Agreed document package, passports and fee receipt
- Witness identification as instructed by the registrar
Translation and filing
Translation and certification
Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.
What happens next
File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.
Document overview and case variants
