Marked: 0 of 5
01Check the car, VIN and seller.

What to do

Ask the seller for the original vehicle registration certificate (saobraćajna dozvola) and evidence of authority to sell. Match the vehicle VIN to the record. Obtain an independent technical inspection before a deposit; a registration record is not a guarantee of condition or absence of all risks.

Where to go

Seller and independent technical specialist.

What to prepare

  • Original saobraćajna dozvola, VIN and seller’s authority
02Agree the contract and payments.

What to do

Agree the sale contract and payment method. Ask a notary which signatures and documents require certification for this transaction. Check the seller, buyer, VIN and handover terms rather than relying on an unchecked template.

Where to go

Transaction parties and notary for signature certification.

What to prepare

  • Contract naming VIN, parties, price and handover terms
03Check and pay the applicable tax.

What to do

For a used-car purchase between individuals who are not VAT taxpayers, open the official transfer-tax calculation service. It uses engine power, capacity and age from the registration certificate. Purchases from a company may follow different tax rules.

Where to go

Official eUprava tax service for applicable transactions.

What to prepare

  • Power, engine capacity and age from the registration record
04Prepare inspection, insurance and documents.

What to do

Confirm the checklist with a technical inspection station and MUP: purchase evidence, prior registration, buyer identification and applicable tax, inspection and compulsory-insurance evidence. Foreign-buyer status and imported vehicles require separate checks.

Where to go

Inspection station, insurer and receiving MUP office.

What to prepare

  • Acquisition record, registration, buyer details, inspection and insurance as required
05Complete registration and check the result.

What to do

File the ownership-change/registration documents through the applicable procedure. Confirm who submits to MUP, whether plates change and when to collect the certificate and sticker. Check the issued VIN and owner details; signing a contract alone does not complete registration. If the external site is temporarily unavailable, keep this checklist and confirm filing with MUP or the inspection station; document preparation does not require signing in to eUprava.

Where to go

Prescribed MUP/inspection-station registration channel.

What to prepare

  • Filing confirmation and issued registration documents to check VIN
Translation and filing

Translation and certification

Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.

What happens next

File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.

Message to the institution

Fill in your details and send this through an official channel shown above. This asks how to proceed; it is not a government form or a completed application. Do not attach originals or sensitive personal data to ordinary email until the institution confirms a safe way to send them.

Hello,

I would like to follow the “Buying and registering a car” procedure myself. My situation: [citizenship and current status in Serbia], [municipality], [brief circumstances and goal].

Could you please confirm:
1. Which department handles my case and where should I file?
2. Must I use an online service or prescribed form? If so, please send the current link and instructions.
3. Which documents apply to my case; are originals, copies or additional evidence needed?
4. For foreign-issued records, is apostille/legalization and a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač) required? In which order?
5. How should I file, obtain proof of receipt and check status?

Thank you.
