01Identify the animal species and travel regime

What to do

For a dog, cat or ferret, select conditions for the departure country. Sale/transfer to another owner is not ordinary non-commercial travel; other species have a separate package.

Where to go

Official veterinary authority in the departure country

What to prepare

  • Species, age, microchip, country and itinerary

First identify your route

  • Arrival from the EU or another country with simplified conditions.
  • Arrival from a country requiring a certificate and/or antibody-titre test.
  • Other pet species — rules must be checked separately.
02Check the chip and valid vaccination

What to do

Have a veterinarian match the chip to the papers and rabies-vaccination dates. Allow the prescribed waiting period after a first vaccination. Antibody testing is not required for every country: check the relevant official section before ordering it.

Where to go

Authorised veterinarian in the departure country

What to prepare

  • Microchip and vaccination records; titre result where required
03Obtain the appropriate passport or certificate

What to do

Listed European countries use the prescribed passport regime; other country groups require an official veterinary certificate. It is issued by the authorised service, not drafted freely by the owner. Check transit and return-entry rules too.

Where to go

Competent veterinary authority in the departure country

What to prepare

  • Passport or prescribed certificate and vaccination records
  • Authority for the accompanying person if required
04Present the animal and originals on entry

What to do

Before travel confirm a suitable border crossing and the carrier's requirements. Present the animal, chip and original papers to border control as requested. After arrival, give the records to a local veterinarian for continuing vaccinations.

Where to go

Border control; then a local veterinary clinic

What to prepare

  • Original passport/certificate and test results required by your regime
Translation and filing

Translation and certification

Before translating a foreign-issued record, ask the receiving institution whether it needs a Serbian translation by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač), whether an apostille/legalization is required, and in which order. Requirements differ by country and document. An ordinary or automatic translation is not a certified translation when certification is required.

What happens next

File only through the confirmed method. Keep a copy of the submission, case/application number and proof of receipt. Ask how to check status, when to expect a reply and what to do if more information is requested.

Document overview and case variants

What may be required

  • Pet passport/document where applicable
  • Microchip number
  • Rabies vaccination record
  • Veterinary certificate and/or antibody-titre result where required

Compare this list with the documents in each step and the chosen authority's requirements. You can read the guide and prepare the package yourself without submitting a request.

Common variants

  • Arrival from the EU or another country with simplified conditions.
  • Arrival from a country requiring a certificate and/or antibody-titre test.
  • Other pet species — rules must be checked separately.

The correct variant can only be confirmed after checking your status, documents and the authority's requirements.

TimingStart early: timing depends on the departure country, first rabies vaccination and whether an antibody-titre test is required.
